Bully Spyware

I thought I would share this article to help average users identify what problems may be lurking on their machines. I spend a good portion of my day cleaning up student machines that have all kinds of nasty malware/ spyware/ virus activity, most of the time people have no idea (and don't care) that these things are there. They simply state that they can no longer update or that things are working. Well, I read about a new variety of spyware that adds Kaspersky antivirus (obviously an illegal copy) that runs a scan removing all spyware software with the exception of the trojan that it piggy backed on.

geeky firefox search tool

Credit Sean Ward with developing this handy search plugin for firefox. For those who are curious or those that actually need to know or verify the manufacturer of a specific network device the first 3 hexadecimal numbers of you MAC address can be entered into the IEEE OUI database to find the corresponding company. You could do that here or install his plugin and use the search box in Firefox, brillant!

Nice work Sean

homecoming

Is there anything more fun than homecoming weekend on a college campus? As a student, alum, or general party goer I would say definitely not, bring on the beer, friends and normally football. Well I have a new perspective on this good-time campus event, and that is from the humble helpdesk seat. I watch as student led tours come and go pointing out the changes and updates, but better yet is observing the well off alum that return dressed like Trump, gracing us all with their presence. They have forgotten what it is too be a student or maybe they never truly knew, thats not my problem. I don't know where I am going with this other than to say, live and let live and don't judge me, Earl. Now where's my beer.

More Halloween goodness

Personally, I do not like haunted houses and choose to pretty much avoid them. After perusing this website full of things to add to your haunted house, you can be damn sure i will continue to stay away.. I guess part of me would like to see some of this furniture in action, around mid-afternoon in a well-lit area :). Check it out. I believe The Ring TV might be the scariest on the page.

MMA class last night - it went super. Learned the triangle choke and anaconda choke and worked them the majority of the time. It is very humbling grappling for 3 minute rounds with 30 second rest over and over. Granted it is day 2 and I am still adapting my muscles and lungs to this... it is time to strength and condition training as well. I found a great site at rosstraining.com that offers low-tech body weight oriented exercises that focus on the combat athlete.

time is passing me by

life is short and if you feel like you want to try something new, search it out and try it. Last night I attended my first mma class just a few blocks from campus. This is something that has been building for around a year or so now and last night was the first step in seeing it through. Before arriving at the gym, it is safe to say I was nervous and not so much because of the combative nature of mma but because of the other people training there. Would they be meathead punks or humble normal guys who happen to persue fighting as a hobby. Thankfully, it was the latter. The guys at the gym were outstanding fighters who welcomed my novice arse into the class and were happy that I was there. Hell, I even garnered a couple of small compliments on my grappling towards the end of the night.. hehe sweet. So Thursday is the next class night and the rest of the mma team should be there. They had traveled to a competition in Hawaii. Thursday promises to be an even better experience as I am expecting to work with the boxing / kickboxing coaches as well as get some more mat time working on submission grappling / jiu-jitsu. I must say as great as it was, I woke up a little bit sore this morning in the back and knee areas.. apparently I wasn't used to that type of activity.. go figure.

So all in all, the bottom line is that if you want something bad enough you will seek it out and make it happen.. no matter what other people will say or think of you. life is to short and time is passing us by.

Apple's in glasses houses...

I will admit now that I am using my MBP close to 95% of the time and getting ready to install Vista RC2 via Parallels, I really really like my Apple. I too also get a chuckle out of the I'm a pc.and I am a mac commercials, I think they are amusing and sometimes sorta accurate. But lets be real, Apple's are not immune from common problems, soon will come the day when a real viable 'in the wild' virus strikes the lovable fruit. Until then try some user contributed stories from the otherside of the tracks.

Lasly, think you know the stereotypical netizen? think again. and again.

around campus

As a part of my job I spend a fair amount of time walking from building to building around campus and I have noticed that there are some strange things being promoted on campus flyers. Sometimes it is the choice of verbage other times it is nifty image accompanying otherwise bland headlines, and now and again it is both image and text that combine to complete the wierdness.

After such a great piece of hype and buildup, I bet you are waiting for the big payoff, some walk off home run piece of evidence. Nope don't have it.. not yet.. as the idea came to me midway back to my office. Alas, you must wait.. though I could share that in the bathroom I normally frequent there is a sign with the headline "You Are Not Alone"..thankfully dear sign you are wrong.

take a second

Well I have sat down to make updates to my blog several times in the last few days and it just never seems to get finished, so here I go again. I guess the big thing that I am excited about sharing is that I have located a very close (a few blocks from Earlham) establishment to beginning learning Mixed Martial Arts fighting or MMA. They have an MMA team and classes are T / TH in the evening working on boxing, kick boxing, grappling, and jiu jitsu. My motivation for seeking this out is self confidence, fitness, and a desire to know just what I am capable of doing. As someone with no real experience in any of these areas I am a little nervous to walk in the gym, but I am also glad because I will not be bringing any ego with me and I think that will allow me to pick it up even faster. Next Tues is my first meeting - I will post an update soon after :)

On the geek side of things I have my Intel MacBook Pro now and am really glad to have an apple again. I am going to run Parallels VM windows environment rather than fully boot into windows, just for ease of use. It does a beautiful job of effortlessly running XP in this way, nothing like it used to be with Virtual PC.

Finally, a photo that was taken by the Earlham Word newspaper journalist after interviewing some of the new CS Staff. Yep ladies 2 for 1 geeks and dorks!
